National Theatre Meeting
A Night at the Theatre, 19th December
Join us at the National Theatre, London just before Christmas. This is a golden opportunity for theatre lovers as the meeting will include:
- A technical backstage tour of The Lyttelton Theatre
- A talk by top theatre Lighting Designer Paule Constable
- Pre show supper
- Tickets to see ‘The Waves’ at The Cottesloe Theatre
Paule Constable is one of the busiest Lighting Designers in the business but she has offered to take time out during her lighting of ‘Carmen’ at Covent Garden to give a talk to STLD members about theatre lighting.
The Waves is lit by a quite radical and minimalist solution, which we will keep as a surprise, and Pauline will also be talking about her other show currently in the Olivier.
This will be given in the Olivier Auditorium between two performances of ‘The Waves’ - one of her shows running at The National Theatre complex. The STLD has also reserved a limited number of tickets for members to see the play afterwards.
‘The Waves’ is a work devised by Katie Mitchell and the Company from the text of Virginia Woolf's novel, The Waves, and is described by The National Theatre’s publicity as a multi-media production.
Before the presentation members will be able to look backstage and see the workings of The Lyttelton Theatre including the new distributed sine-wave dimming system.
This meeting is also open to members’ partners and will be an excellent opportunity to meet up for the last time before Christmas.
Members and partners can attend any part of the meeting, and to help with the organisation please say which sections of the meeting you would like to attend. The only cost is the ticket price to see The Waves performance, which is £28. We have reserved a block of seats, so payment is to the STLD rather than to the National.
The schedule is as follows:
15.00 Meet for tour in Lyttelton Foyer coffee area
15.20 Backstage technical tour of the Lyttelton Theatre
16.30 Meal in restaurant overlooking the Thames
17.30 Clear of restaurant
18.00 Talk by Paule Constable in the Olivier Auditorium
19.30 Performance of ‘The Waves’. The performance lasts for two and a half hours with one interval.
There may also be a brief look backstage in the Cottesloe if there is the opportunity on the day.
If you are interested in coming do please reply as soon as possible. We will open this meeting to ALD members also, although the priority will be for those in the STLD.
